You have to consider what is at stake here.
to the religious side what is at stake is everyone's mortal soul, the most prescious thing anyone owns, an immortal peice of divinity infused in all of us.
to the non religious what is at stake is watching fellow humans subscribe to beliefs that deep in the non believers heart they feel are complete nonsense. Imagine if your best friend said they wanted to become a Scientologist or start worshiping zeus and you can begin to understand this feeling.
Therefore, both sides feel there is too much to lose for the other side for them to give up the fighting.
edit-if you read through some of the answers given here, you will see perfect example of what i am talking about.

I totally agree with you, however this is not possible. When someone believes in something sooo strongly they would die for it, they aren't going to accept those who say they're wrong. It goes both ways. This is how almost every war ever has started, religion. And by the way, there really isn't something called non religion, everyone has religion, but not everybody conforms to well known religions or churches, a lot of people have their own beliefs and don't conform at all

believing you have the absolute truth because you have faith doesnt say anything about it at all. when you have faith it is a belief with no evidence, its like having a belief for no reason or very weak reasons.. its why it cant be trusted to be able to achieve the truth.
but with what i just said i could care less about it. The human mind has the power to reject idea's or accept idea's as it pleases them, which is why you are in you are in whatever religion you are in. i cannot think of a person who has been known to have the absolute truth, and who was considered to be right.

do you believe in anything and if you do would it be worth defending having the tenacity to stand up for your belief shows that you are not a cowardly person that you do have the capabilities of defending what you believe in and makes your cause even more determining and you learn more than you ordinarily would from other christians or others and their beliefs it is a wonderful way of learning about others and how strong they feel about it

We both think were right. Though I would have to question why an atheist would defend his "beliefs" because they are beliefs in non-belief. It is oxymoronic in itself. Any good person shouldn't really fight over this issue, but defend it, and any good person who does happen to be religious is generally just trying to make you understand why they believe and help you to see it.

Because belief goes beyond a personal basis and effects every facet of society.
Were you born yesterday?
"How does it affect everyone when we die individually?"
Because while we are ALIVE we enact laws, legislate belief, restrict education, and create social and cultural morals that conform to the majority religious belief.
I guess you were born yesterday.

Stupid huh?!? I agree. Thats why I chose a spiritual route rather then a religious route. Spirituality respects all religions, religions make you think you know the only RIGHT way to live and every one else is wrong

religion is just another word for hipocrisy.take catholic priests for instance, sex before marriage is a nono, sex is only for procreation.sex with little boys.ok!do one of you religous hypocrites want to explain that one.or did god say it's ok,because there boys not girls?or all them kids were lying?or they said 3 hail marys and all is forgiven?what about all the ppl that have died because of religion?the kids that have been abused, molested and beaten? how did forgiving the churches or the priests help them? every major conflict the world has seen has been caused by religion.

I feel that some folks in each camp have (parts of) the absolute proof.
Of course, what do I know?
I am just a self-read Christian Orangutan here in the Zoo.

Because often times religious people force their personal idiology on others and I don't like being told what my personal values are supposed to be & how I'm supposed to act: that's personal. Once they respect human rights & let people decide what to do for themselves, my beef with them will end.
