Having lived in Thailand for six years now I think I may be qualified to answer this question.

Most Thai men are not gay and the number of gay men and women in Thailand echoes that of other countries. But Thai society as a whole is not overtly homophobic - the important word here is 'overtly' - because prejudices are present in the community.

Although homosexual acts have never been outlawed in Thailand it does not mean that they are universally accepted, this is not the case. There is however a level of tolerance that is not the case in the western world, Africa or some other Asian countries.

Now while many Thai man may be open to limited homosexual experiences this is more to do with experimentation and the general attitude to sexual activity, which seems to me to be more free and easy than other places.

Homophobia exists but for cultural and belief systems reasons it is not expressed openly. It does show itself in other more subtle ways though.

Of course many Thai families are still quite large - five or six children in each household so it is likely that very many families will have at least one gay child. They are accepted as part of the family like everyone else, again because of the central importance of the family in Thai and Asian life, and probably for no other reason.

A short description of my experience in Thailand.

No, this is not true. Thai culture may be more accepting of feminine men and "lady boys", but most Thai men are straight and very masculine.

Whoever told you this is either a bigot or a fool. You should not listen to them anymore.

I don't think so. I'm a foreign expatriate who have worked in Thailand for many years. In fact, its the other way around. Most Thai men usually have more than one girlfriend. I never knew any Thai man who does't have any girlfriend. A Thai man with one girlfriend is unusual. It has something to do with their culture. For a man to have more than one wife or girlfriend is generally accepted and is never frowned upon.

If you have the chance to spend some time in Thailand, you'll find these Thai phrases in very common usage:

Mia Yaai -> legal wife (literally, major wife)
Mia Noi -> a lover (literally, minor wife)

Many of them are. I don't know why, but some of my Thai friends say it's just a fashion. Imagine that!

No.. Less than other countries in the world but unfortunately it's growing among teeangers as a fashion lately. Their behaviors are not permanent, they change after living/studying/working in the different environment.

eastglam has quite accurate observation. This could be due to Thais being Buddhist, where they believe in reincarnation and links to their previous lives. Hence they are more tolerant of fellow human possibly attributing traits to their previous lives as opposite gender or even animal. Possibly hence the huge tolerance by the Thais for foreigners' quirky behaviour and attitude, who in turn take advantage of them.
