You can either choose 72 hrs of jail or 72 hrs of a mental ward. It varies from case to case and what age the patient is. I believe in NC that if you are under 16 or maybe 18 you have to do 30 days in rehab. I know because my ex boyfriend's sister tried it and had the choice of the mental ward or jail because it is against that law to kill yourself. Another case was there was a young man, 16 I think that had to do the 30 days rehab in Dorthia Dix.

It would depend on the individual.I had a friend who was in for 2 months.1 month in ICU for the damage she caused to heart.After ICU she spent another month in the mental health ward.Alot of one on one counsling and family counsling.She had a lot of issues that caused severe depression.
I also know someone who spent only a week in the hospital.

They keep you until you're medically safe to go home, or possibly to a psych ward to help the patient deal more successfully with the problems at hand.

depends on the laws in the city you live. some places can have you admitted for detox/rehab for up to 3 months. are you planning on o.d.ing? it's not a good idea.
