A cat just wandered into my life today, and it will be another few hours before I can get to the store and get him food. He looks very hungry. What do I feed him in the meantime?

I have no canned meats and he doesn't want a hotdog.

Well believe me I have 3 cats and had been in that predecament alot! What I suggest is get cat food, but if you can't bread, milk, cheese, and dog food. But don't I repeat don't get in the habit of feeding them these things it does not have a good after effect! It can make them fat and constepated if given too much! If you go too long withour cat food, he just might eat you! Just kidding!

Hi Gabe, I notice that some people have suggested feeding your new cat milk, and others have advised against it - thus it might be an idea to explain to you that many cats have what is known as Lactose Intolerance (which essentually means that your moggy may get diarrhoea +/- vomiting if allergic to Lactose, because lactose is the main fat in cow's milk) (Not all cats develop Lactose intolerance and thus, some cats can tolerate cow's milk - however my vet recommends giving only watered-down milk or lactose-free milk to cats!)(But I don't give watered down milk to my own cats!)
Secondly, I note some people have advocated giving Tuna to your new kitty. If you do give a cat Human tinned food, remember that a lot of additives in human tinned food are not so good for moggies! Here I am referring to that evil concoction known as 'added salt'! So if you give your cat some tinned Tuna - be sure to rinse it first!
I must admit that I am surprised that your cat didn't want a bit of your 'hotdog' (Now while someone could probably write a treatise on the health of hotdogs in a cat's diet - and indeed in a human diet -LOL - I s'pose all of our diets could be questioned!) But my surprise is that your cat wasn't keen to eat the hotdog -so my theory is this - perhaps your new cat is not so hungry after all and perhaps he/she can wait long enough for you to go to the supermarket! (Or is it possible that Hotdogs in your country enjoy an absence of meat?) Anyway, I would suggest a bit of raw meat of any kind - if you have it!
And finally, I would suggest a bit of a search round the neighbourhood to see if this kitty has another home! (Just in case he's faking being homeless - some cats do! - LOL)

Depends on what you do have on hand. I'd not feed it milk because most mature cats become lactose intolerant (and you could make it sick). If you have chicken (turkey, beef) soup, a little of that'll do, maybe mixed with a little rice or bread to give the cat a little substance. A soft boiled egg (some cats don't like eggs). If you have leftover chicken or other meat, you can cut that into small bits and offer it. It doesn't have to be lot, just a little nosh to hold him over until you can get some real cat food for him.

My current cat adopted me when she was a stray single mother and initially would eat ANYTHING because she was truly starving. We discovered her because she was stealing our dog's food from his bowl when he wasn't looking. Now she is fussy because I spoil her, but she will usually try new things if I sprinkle it with a little grated cheese first so you might try that to entice him. If your new friend was that hungry he would eat whatever you gave him in the "meat" family (A little fresh meat won't harm him in the short term...better than nothing! Long term, cats need vitamin enriched cat food for complete nutrition).

Starving cats are not fussy. Sounds like he'll be ok until later when you get to the store. If he just won't eat if might be another problem....constipation, gums, teeth etc. and it might take a trip to the vet to sort out. Good luck!

raw egg, lightly beaten. Any left-over chicken meat or steak or de-boned fish (in the meantime). Tuna or plain sardines in a can (just for now). Bread spread with a bit of margerine. Hot dogs and sandwich meats may be too spicy for the cat's taste. Do not give bacon.

The best thing for the cat is its dietary cat food it supplies the cat with what it needs to survive longer than normal and keeps it healthy however with out it a substitution is in need use some lunch meat or tuna or even some caned chicken if you have it. But for the well being of the cat get its veterinarian recommended cat food. Good luck!

You could try some lunch meat or cheese or chicken, tuna,, but try to get to the store as soon as possible to get him some cat food. If he is extremely hungry he may eat just about anything till he gets the cat food. Good luck!!!

Raw chicken, raw fish or raw turkey should work fine as long as it is cut into tiny pieces and given a little at a time. If you make the pieces too big, the cat will either ignore it or throw it up. If you give too many pieces at a time, you will have the same problem.

I don't think there is anything other than canned tuna or dog food that you could feed a cat. He may be sick and just not want to eat too. If it's a stray cat he'll need a check up for sure. Good luck.

Since cats are obligate carnivores, they should be fed like one--no grains or veggies are needed in a cats diet. Yesterday, my cats had beef heart, and today they had a chicken hindquarter. Other foods my cats eat on a regular basis include beef liver, beef kidney, pork roast, lamb breast, pollack, whiting, and eggs.
