Well - where do we start? As you know there are so many environmental problems we face today. On a personal level, I strongly believe that the majority world needs to reduce its level of consumption. Rich people have a very high ecological footprint and consequently are using far more than their fair share of the world's resources. If we are going to reach the Millennium Development goals by 2015 and bring people out of poverty, they will need a share of the resources - we can do this sustainably, but there needs to be a radical shift in the distribution and use of what we have left. So - not to go on too much! You, me, everyone needs to seriously look at current lifestyle choices and change - become more sustainable. Of couse, there are many other issues that need to be tackled - political power being one.

I could give up jet travel. The jet engine is probably the main source of upper air level CO2. Each engine burns 2-5 tons of kerosene per hour. Each ton of fuel burned produces 3.66 ton of CO2 and 1.56 tons of H2O. Nature does not have an efficient system to deal with that load. Thousands of hours of jet traffic every day over the earth. The oceans are the major CO2 sink absorbing and buffering it instantly. But until the CO2 drifts down to the sea level it may be a 'greenhouse gas'. The 40 year timeline of CO2 increase certainly meshes nicely with the 40 year increase in jet traffic.

Don't worry - we have a system called 'Capitalism' that will make these decisions for us.

What we 'give up' will depend on the 'market' - some goods and services will become more expensive (eg. air-conditioning, air travel) others will become cheaper (eg. seaside properties).

Give up anything to do with fashion. Wear products out instead of throwing them out.
