Did the French get the hint when Lance Armstrong won 4, 5, 6 or 7 times?

They would argue that every winner since Fignon has cheated in one way or another.

For example, some French believe that Lemond violated the spirit of fair competition by using aerodynamic equipment.

Many believe that every winner since then has been on EPO, steroids, hgh, etc, which is why the clean-living, fair-racing French haven't had an honest shot at a win since the early 80's.

They actually realized it at the end of WW II, but really got the message when Lance Armstrong won his 1st Tour.
