Sorry, more background details should've been provided. Here are some of the major things I have been /am addicted to. Cannabis (20 years) which helps me sleep, relax and not be so 'full on'. Alcohol 15 years - I stopped drinking a couple of years ago by substituting to video games to escape reality (all my spare time). I saw a doctor but the antidepressants made me shake violently and passed out for about 8 hours so I stopped those. the other doctor asked if I had anyone I could talk to - I said no- he said you should try talking to someone...Ive taken a lot of Ecstasy (10 years) which I stopped taking about 7 years ago. generally I am insecure.

sounds like you have an obsessive compulsive nature. i can totally relate. recognising it is a huge first step to dealing with it! you dont say what some of your addictions are...but the 12 step program really helps me with all those areas of my life.ive learned alot about myself through the program , and ALOT about addiction.

I don't know you and to assume I could answer accurately based on the limited information given is unlikely but the behavior you describe is common among passionate people who have no defining purpose in life.
Being a passionate or driven person is a good quality but unless it is given some meaningful direction, it will apply itself randomly to activities we engage in.
don't know if it applies in this case but that is a common scenario. The therapeutic remedy is to explore what is truly meaningful to an individual then develop a program by which the individual can apply their energy to achieve a directed goal.

I'm 36 and I am the same way. I hate to look outward at all the BS. I do what I like and forget everything else. Life is hum drum.
cigarettes, pot, videogames, movies, football and basketball games. We are all slaves to the system.

Its simple, you do things that are addictive because of a personality trait that rewards your brain chemistry, if addictive behaviour causes you and the others around pain, then redirect to something more positive, like exercize, or painting, or writing

Perhaps you have an addictive personality. Does everything center around you? are things that go wrong always the other person's fault? Those are traits of an addictive personality. Best of luck.

Well Jerry Garcia is dead. His name means nothing now. His name is on ties (come on ties?) not to mention the trendy ice cream.
Don't take advice from this guy....

You have an addictive personality. It is very common. You have to exercise restraint and use common sense to realize when your personality may hurt yourself or others.
Be honest with yourself and know when to say when...good luck!

Because you enjoy it. that is the simplest answer. your body sees it as a reward and will want you to do it more.
