AVI should work just fine if you open it with Windows Media Player. In fact, it might be a better video than a MPG formatted file.

You should be able to also get it to play in Windows Media Player, but you may have to associate it first. Right click on the file in Windows Explorer and select Open with.... (or in older version you may have to hold down the Ctrl key and right click), choose Windows Media Player and then select the option that says something like "Always open with this program" - now the file type will be associated and every time you double-click on an AVI file, it will open in WMP. In case it doesn't open, you may need to update your codecs or even download a special codec from the website where you downloaded the file. If none of that works, download DIVX from www.divx.com, install, and follow the similar steps to the above to get it to associate.

You need the player. Power DVD is one. Media player will work too (as one of the other people suggested) Depends on the version.
