I've seen rotten apples on the tree and healthy ones in my fridge.

When does an apple die?

I don't think you could use these terms to an apple but the apple does have life fuctions like breathing and synthetising sugars from starch in the process of ripening.

The individual cells of the apple are alive until they break down. However the term live is misleading. They are not alive as people or animals are alive. The part we eat if no one eats it just rots providing nutrients for the seeds when they grow.

seperate from the tree its dead. For a while though it appears alive and healthy.

While on the tree it's living. When it is removed from the tree, by picking or falling, it is dying/dead.

Unpicked it's alive.
Picked it's just like a severed body part.
