Sounds odd. Try going through START, and PROGRAMS. Go up to Accessories and pick Entertainment. See if you have CD Player in that section.

You probably installed a program, such as QuickTime Player, or Real Player that turned off the regular Music CD default, so you have to do it MANUALLY again. This whole thing might be FIXED if you check to see if Windows Media Player is version 11. Try to uninstall that through the Control Panel's ADD REMOVE Programs section. Then try to download the older version Windows Media Player 10 from the Microsoft website at http://www.microsoft.com

Good luck and Happy Computing!

It most probably has to do with the format of you CD see if it can be played with your media player. If not try redownloading drivers for your CD Drive. If the sound is the problem (as in you cant hear anything) then its most likely a driver issue or your speakers are not working (check connections). Next time tell us what media player you are using.

If you can watch movies (DVD) and can't play a CD - is it a separate drive or a combo drive? Sounds like your driver could be corrupted. Is this recent?

If it's recent, you can try a system restore. Start/Programs/System Tools/Restore

Restore's only good for a few days so it has to be recent. I will ***-U-ME that it's not your sound card as you can hear the DVDs.
