great idea, what good does it do to buckle them up in a car seat and then kill them with second hand smoke.

That's what we need...another unenforceable law. It's nice to know that there aren't any worse things on the road except people smoking in there cars with children....no speeders, no reckless drivers, etc. What's next...pass a law that says you cannot take your kids to McDonald's? After all, that's not healthy. If you go to a restaurant, are the food police going to make sure that your kids eat healthy? Or will you get a ticket. Don't even think of taking them to Disneyland or a Dodger game...can't let them eat a hot dog. When you start passing laws like this, it can be a very slippery slope. Look where it all started.....all non-smokers wanted was a separate area in a restaurant that was designated non-smoking. Look where it is today...you can't even smoke outdoors at the beach or a park. Be careful what you ask for when letting someone else decide what is good for your child.

I think it is awesome! I have a child who suffered terribly with asthema as a baby (and I didn't smoke), and I myself have asthema. I know what it is like to not be able to breathe, and for somebody to do something to a child that has such a high risk of making a child go through that is horrible! The effects of cigarrette smoking near children is so much worse than what most people realize! I think it would be a big step forward in trying to protect our children and thier health. A car is a small confined area, a child has nowhere to go to get away from the smoke in a car, and leaving the window down all the time is not always possible. I think it is inconsiderate of people when they smoke in a car with children. And yes, I quit smoking a few years before I got pregnant with my child, so I do know what it is like to be a smoker.

I think they shouldn't have to pass the law, I smoke.... It's a filthy habit and my kids shouldn't have to be stuck in a car that I'm polluting, If it's an adult....they can walk if they would rather but a child really has no say.

Well, since some parents do not care enough about the health of their children to do without smoking with their kid in the car on their own, I guess they have to make a law to force them to do the right thing.

It doesn't help the poor kids when they have to inhale the filth at home though.

Dear dp,I think that is the sensable thing to do,especially when the safety of your child is at stake,do you realise what your child is subject to when you smoke in the car? He or she inhales the same gunk you inhale, even more than you think, there are carciogensthat cause CANCER in those cigarettes! Its even worse for a child no matter what age they might beThink of your helpless chid before you light up when you are in the car, after all they are your flesh and blood. Jan

If you value the health of your children you wouldn't be doing it anyway. My wife and daughter are both Rn's they and myself would agree it would be great law. When people do smoke in front of their children the child doesn't have a chance or choice.

I'm all for it! You can kill yourself slowly if you want, but to put a child at risk by filling the car with a known carcinogen should be equated to voluntary manslaughter.

Smoking sucks, smokers are weak, and ALL of them litter. No exceptions.

If passed, it will certainly improve the health of (and probably save the lives of) many children.

That's great! That is the way it should be! No reason for a kid to have lung cancer by the time he's 5 years old!
