I have an appointment to get her spayed on Feb 15. (I had to wait a bit until after we got our tax return). Anyway, she just went into heat for the 1st time and she has been pacing around purring/crying/howling for 2 days now. I tried the q tip method and it didnt work bcuz she is still walking around calling loudly. Did I do it wrong? I don't really want to have to do it again i was very grossed out.

I've seen the swab method in a cat book (The Book of the Cat.) It's legitimate. I mean, sometimes people want to keep a good breeding cat unspayed, but they don't want her in heat every time she feels like it.

I'd say get a book on it (check the library first) or look online. It's gross...ugh...but it's a temporary fix until you can spay her and I know about the whole yowling, weird "I loooooove you!" behavior, the desperate attempts to escape. Gross. Cat sex is GROSS!

Try it again.

Q-tip method?? What the . . . ?? Just keep her inside, the heat should only last 4 days or so. Then you are laughing as she is due to be altered on the 15th. Phone the vet if you are not sure what to do, just keep her away from the boys!
Good luck

What is the q-tip method?
There is nothing you can do except take her to the vet and ask them to give her a hormone injection which will help bring her out of heat.

The Q-Tip method (or a pencil eraser) will only give the cat temporary relief; an orgasm. The heat will still be raging because, at the moment of mating the male cat's sperm also has a hormonal effect on the female's body. After a certain amount of sperm has been introduced into her, the heat stops, due to the hormonal change.
That's why trying to relieve her yourself won't really work.

I've had cats all my life and would never attempt to do this, there is so much there that can be damaged if something is done wrong. Please just wait it out if you could. I would only get a professional to do this.

Please don't do the q-tip method that sounds like your rapeing your cat. Being in heat is a natural thing, it doesn't hurt and it cant be shortened not matter what you do she will stay in heat the whole period even if she is sexually satisfied. So please just let things go naturally. It will be over soon. Trust me i have 3 female cats that i breed.

For God's sake, if you don't know what you are doing, don't go sticking foreign objects into your cat's internal organs. You might damage something by going too far.

My friend just told me today that she used to put her cat in the shower when she was in heat. Close the door/curtain and turn on the water (make sure it's not hot). She said the cat was quiet for several hours while it licked itself dry. She swears it works!
