you get wet, really it is just a symbol to show in public that you are a follower of christ and that you will die to your old ways and when you come up from the water you will start a new life serving god. there is nothing mystical or magical about baptism, it is strictly symbolic.

Baptism is being able to follow Jesus, and being obedient. It wont get you into heaven. It is showing people that you are not ashamed of being a follower of Jesus.

It's a good excuse to have a party and get gifts. (Even though you would probably get a lot of cheap crosses.)
Beyond that all it does is it makes the baby cry.
