No offense, but the Bible is not exactly a good source for questions like that, considering it was obviously put together by mortals.

Patrone, so are you saying that people addressed god as "she" before christ?

You have already contradicted alot of the beliefs of some christians...

God isn't a "man", God created man. God became man in jesus christ in order to save the world.

The question requires answers which contradict the assumptions behind this question.

Truthful answers to this question may include statements which are very much like statements found in the Bible.

First you must understand the meaning of the word 'God'. Once you understand that, perhaps with the use of 2 or more dictionaries, then you will understand that God is a universal, philosophically speaking.

But God had a son from the seed of God ("Seed" zro mistranslated "arm" in the book of Isaiah), and Mary carried the son of God, so God must be a being which carries seed and then a woman receives the seed. Also the son is a man and Jesus is a particular and a universal, just as God is both universal and in Jesus God is particular.

No, I cannot explain it without acknowledging the written word of my Lord, at least not without speaking as one of the "mere mortals" you don't rate too highly.

I will do better than that, for I believe that you really want to know. I will pray that God reveal the matter to you. Be willing to let God reveal that God is real, and let God choose how that is to be done. God will know better than any mere mortal can!

Here is a bit of the answer, in your terms, to begin:

In Hebrew, the expression for Holy Spirit is a feminine noun. In Greek, the expression for Holy Spirit is a masculine noun. It is the same Spirit, so I would not take offence or be afraid too quickly, based on linguistics alone.

We have an expression, "nobody's perfect", that people believe. In the Bible, it is restated as "all have fallen short of the glory of God", or "There is none righteous, no not one". But, your common sense will reveal the truth of this: You cannot just be a perfect person- it will always fail, at least a tiny bit if you try on your own, no matter who you happen to be, as long as you are a human. So, a perfect God is clearly not a man- in your heart, you know it, even if you may not like it.

I have acknowledged my need for God's grace many years ago, and know that without it, my life would have no meaning.

Before you can answer that question you have to find out where the word God came from. For this you have to look at the ancient hebrew bible which is where all the modernised rewritten bibles originally came from. The jews were not allowed to say out aloud the name Jehovah(which was the name of their God), so it was shortened to JHVH, then after a little while longer they were not even allowed to say this, so to they replaced it with g_d, still to this day do Jews use this. When King James did the translation he replaced the _ with an 'o' and came up with the word 'God'. However, when translations were done in the bible, everywhere it says'Elohim' in the ancient hebrew bible it was this word they changed into 'God', but Elohim in ancient hebrew is plural and means 'Those who came from the sky'.

I hope that made sense cause I'm knackered lol.

So in answer to your question God really means 'Those who came from the sky" so can't really be either male or female as it's true meaning means more than one person.

Have a look at this http://www.blueletterbible.org goto genesis and look for the word God in the verses, there is a 'c' box next to the verses that will translate the verse back to hebrew, it is here you will see the word Elohim.

You can do some research on the word Elohim from here..
http://www.rael.org or type in Elohim into Google.

have fun :)

Okay, how to do this without using Bible quotes: well, God created Adam, who the Bible says was made in God's image. Since Adam was a man, it logically follows that God is also. Also, while it is true that those who wrote the words of God and put them in the Bible, and they could have assumed God is male, there is another thing to consider. The Bible says that the Holy Spirit came upon the Virgin Mary and she conceived a child (Jesus Christ). Wouldn't it just seem plain silly for the Holy Spirit, who the Bible says is One and the same with God and Jesus Christ, to be a FEMALE who impregnated Mary? A female spirit impregnating a human female? I am trying to answer your question from a purely human, logical point of view, leaving Bible quotes out of it. Either way, it makes sense to me that God is male.

Outside the Bible there isn't any of this kind of knowledge. The evidence of God is visible in His creation, but the details are in the Bible, so how can you explain without using the Bible?

In short, in my own words... The first man sinned, condemning all his descendants. In order for man to be redeemed and restored, a man had to pay the penalty. That man had to be a perfect spotless sacrifice in order to be acceptable to God. Man born of man's bloodline couldn't do that because all men have sinned through Adam, but Jesus, not born of the seed of a man, could, as He was God. God as a man could live a perfect sinless life and still qualify to take the place of mankind on the cross.

That is info from the Bible, but put into my own paraphrase.

What would be the point of explaining it WITHOUT using Bible quotes? That's where people get the belief to begin with, so that's where you should look for the answer. No offense, but random strangers on the Internet aren't exactly a good source for questions like that either.

God the Father and God the Holy Spirit aren't male or female. Jesus actually WAS a man, but we refer to God male because that is closest to the role He takes with us. Fathers love, and fathers discipline; God loves, and God disciplines. I'm not against women here or anything, but because of this, and since Jesus Himself became a man, it makes sense to refer to God in the masculine. Christians refer to God as being male because that's how Jesus did it. (if we didn't have the Bible, we'd still refer to God in the masculine, because tradition has passed that down as well.)

Ok, let me get this straight. By your question you are calling God a man (which I can only assume you mean Jesus, who is God in the flesh). That concept came from the Bible but you don't want folks to use the Bible to explain the concept??? That's like asking your parents to prove you were born but refusing to let them show you your birth certificate because it was "put together by mortals." LOL!

God is neither male nor female, god simply IS. In the Bible God is referred to as a He because the Bible was written by partriarchal males. In matriarchal religions, God is referred to as She ... but if there is only ONE GOD, then that god must be both male and female and neither male nor female. I am a 'good Catholic' but I also truly believe that men and women are 'two halves of one whole' and belong together, but I also believe that 'gays are just the same as all other people' and do not deserve to be hated simply because they are gay' ... but I will never stop THINKING about stuff like this, either.

Well that is where you go wrong- the only truth is in the Bible so to not quote GODS ACTUAL WORD, would be dumb- it would mean it is man's opinion rather than the actual truth. That should make sense to many.
God is all spirit- He became man when Jesus came to earth- God became flesh, see John 1:1
God did this so that he could take our place on the cross, and suffer for our sins, he made a way for us to be with him- those who believe that is- those who put their faith in Him are the ones who are and will be saved. That is why we share the gospel with people, because we want them to know the good news that God has done for us. God can do anything remember, and this means make himself into a man, and only God can defeat death and Jesus is the only one who defeated death. See John 10 too about Jesus and God being one.
