I have a Toshiba SD-1800 DVD player and it has trouble playing DVD's.?

Most of the DVD's refuse to load and the on screen message merely says "Please check disk". I have verified that the parental lock settings are set to none. Is there anything else I have forgotten?

Are these commercially available DVDs or home made?
Home made need to match what the player can play and they need to be finalized.

If these are regular movie DVds, then it may be time to buy a new one
