There's a pretty good article on Black Mass on wikipedia, at the address below. Interesting question.
I did not know, exactly (just thought it had something to do with Satanism) but because you asked, now I do!
Have a good one.

A Black Mass is, essentially a rite of religious worship described in the later middle ages as being associated with the worship of Satan. The descriptions at that time were of a rite taht was both a parady of the Catholic Mass as well as a performance of it in reverse. The psalms and prayers were said backwards, it was supposedly performed by a defrocked priest and the altar was supposedly a naked woman and the candles were supposed to be made of the fat of sacrificed children. Outside fo these descriptions there is no evidence that such rites were ever performed during that time period. In the interveening centuries a number of groups have been accused of perfomring such rites, again with no proof that any ot hte events actually took place. Most modern scholars reject the idea that the rite as described ever existed and most modern satanists would not participate in such a rite. The most current idea regarding the Black Mass is that it was never anything more than a fabricated event intended to cause fear and maintain the authority of the church during the middle ages. The concept has since fallen into disuse and is only rarely brought up as anything more than an intellectual device used in debate.
