Mordor!

:P

Seriously, check Robbins Bros. http://www.robbinsbros.com/

Do some homework online about the different colors and ratings, so you'll be better prepared to make the purchase.

Good luck, the hardest part (to me) was pulling the trigger to buy the ring. After that, it was all cruise control. 20 years ago!

You need to know the 4 C's of diamond shopping.

Cut- The shape that the gemologists have give to the stone. Emerald cut, Diamond cut, Marquis, and Princess are the favorites.

Clarity- The quality of the diamond is determined by the amount of inclusions, or mineral deposits inside the stone itself. This can range from i to vs+++ and will be the largest determining factor of the cost of the diamond

Color- Until recently diamonds that were colored were considered less attractive by most, however they have jumped in popularity to being just as popular as clear. Mild pale yellows and pinks are the most common.

Finally Cost- It has been said a man should spend no less than 2 months salary on a engagement ring. I would base this on how much the woman really values monetary items. All women want a nice ring, but most will admit a ring that is too large is a detractor. Rings should be reasonably large for the lifestyle that the woman will be leading.

I hope that this information has assisted you!

Good Luck with the big Q.

Ask her on yahoo answers! I bet she'll say yes...

First you need to learn about the 4 C's. Carat, cut, color, and clarity. If you don't, you can get ripped off.

Second, do NOT go to mall stores like Zales. They are overpriced and the quality of stone is usually not good.

You need to check around town and look for a place that sells loose diamonds. Go there with your knowledge of the C's and get a stone around 1 carat. The setting can be found anywhere, so I wouldn't worry about that unless she wants something other than a solitaire.

The diamond is the most important part of the ring, so you must learn how to buy one. Learn the 4 C's and the rest is cake. BTW, traditionally it is said to spend three times your monthly take home, but that is just what the jewelers want you to do. A one carat looks lovely and isn't as vulgar as a 2+ carat stone.

Four C's!!

First DON'T go to a place like Zales or Kay Jewelers or any big chain like that. Stick with the large independent or smaller chain stores. Better service and ultimately a better ring.

Second, you need to know your price range before you can say what kind of ring you're getting. When you go into a store you will say, I want to spend between X and Z. They will bring you out a range of loose diamonds of all sizes and cuts, clarity, etc. If you specify princess cut, they will only bring those. You choose the one you want. It may not be the size you thought. I really thought I wanted a one carat diamond, but I got a .78 carat and it's perfect. He chose it because of it's brilliancy and clarity. He could have gone up to 1.5 carats with the budget he gave, but he wanted the perfect diamond over size. (He was right)

BTW, my solitaire diamond in a platinum setting and white gold band was around $3000.

Before you buy the ring, make sure you know your girl's RING SIZE. You could look into any jewelry store at the mall, they are all pretty much the same, let them know what you need. You should spend whatever will be gentle to your budget. A beautiful ring doesn't have to cost thousands of dollars. You should buy whatever you can afford. I'm sure your girl will be very happy with it. Good Luck & Congratulations to you both!

know the 4 C's and do not get suckered into the pitches the salesman will throw at you....like "if you love her, then you want the best for her...and this one is a better ___ so this one would be good." What the salesman is emphasizing is that you need to get the best of the best, and downplaying the best one for her part. The best of the best isn't necessarily what would suit the girl the best.

Just start by going to some reputable stores in your area, and see what's what. Don't go overboard with spending; it's the symbolism that counts after all. Buy something you think she might like (though I see she has already "asked" for something specific! That's crazy).

Go to Zales. You are looking at spending upwards of 1500. You might want to know the size :)

My fiance bought my ring for 800.00 at a local pawn shop. If you live in the Chicago area, it is at Wrightwood and Clark.
