The assistant has it because he took 2 pound, and returned each of them 1 pound, meaning that from 28 pound, after giving away 3 pound , he would have 25 (8+8+9) and when that is added to the 2 pound he took it's 27 pound. Basically, he took 9 pound from each person.

The equation used is 3(10-1) +2=29.
The correct equation is 3(10-1) -2=25.
You can't subtract (10-1) and then add (+2). You must subtract both numbers.
