Lots of reasons. Yea, some crooks are stupid. That is our job security. Most people, crooks included, can't help but want to talk. They think they can explain their way out or maybe they just want to know what the cop knows.
I usually approach it pretty simple. I would not be talking to the crook unless I was already prepared to put him in jail. I am simply giving him the chance to "man up" and cooperate. Doing so usually means things go much better for him down the road. Being human, I may have also missed something. Would not be the first time that someone was able to explain to me why they could not have done the crime and ultimately lead me to the right guy. After 18 years I have realized that if I think I am always right, I am in for a rude awakening real soon.

If you watch enough cop shows, you'll notice a striking similarity among almost all of them. Its called being abusive to everyone in sight and they have been able to intimidate ordinary citizens with this type of behavior. Over time, they've learned that if they yell loud enough, struggle hard enough or otherwise make an *** out of themselves, they will get what they want.
Cops, on the other hand, are not ordinary citizens. They deal with the same kind of people all the time. The Miranda Rights are read, but those don't mean anything to people who like to abuse others.
One more thing: these criminals erroneously believe that they can beat the system all on their own. Its a type of gutsy brovado that only gets them deeper into their own sh*t.

Miranda rights are not availed by most criminals because they do not believe in laws. They want to use other tactics to be free from imprisonment.

A misunderstanfing of the law. I'm sure a lot of criminals aren't extremely well-briefed in the whole situation of the justice system.

Because most Lawyers want you to do that so you have to pay them to get you out of trouble. Not to mention if you work with the Ploice they are more likely to work with you. I can say I always do more for the ones who cooperate than the ones who don't. I have actually heard lawyers tell convicts that we are the enemy and lie to them.

We are talking about criminals. Do you really believe that crimials understand and know their miranda rights, and if they do, if they aren't messed up enough to know to use them??!

Maybe they figure the evidence against them is too great, and it would be a waste of time.
