The single best way to know is to ask him. If you're too shy to confront him you can observe his body language. First, do you find him looking directly at you consistently? Second, approach him with a general question about pretty much anything and watch how he reacts to you. I am assuming you are a girl, use your 'woman's intuition'. Typically you will be hard pressed to find a guy who doesn't like you. Whether he is romantically interested or not is another issue and usually, yes, you will have to ask him. BTW, I know these things because I am a guy and as is typical, girls intimidate me. So while I find girls I am interested in, I am so afraid of their rejection, that I shy away from them, however, if a girl I am interested in approaches me (on any subject) I will use my body language and eye contact and easy laughter to show her my interest and let her take it from there. Well you could ask him if he is attracted to you. or you could watch his eyes and see if he looks at you and smiles as you pass by. Or you could ask one of his friends if he likes you or if he has been asking about you.
