There are many problems, but the common ones are underactive (hypothyroid) and overactive (hyperthyroid) Hypothyroid results when your thyroid gland slows down its production of thyroid hormone. Hyperthyroidism results when the thyroid gland produces too much hormone.
Symptoms of hypothyroidism are; weight gain, difficulty losing weight, IBS with constipation, slow heart rate, low bp, low body temp, dry skin, dry thinning hair, depression, fatigue, hairloss, lack of sex drive, sensitivity to light, and muscle and joint aches.
Symptoms of hyperthyroidism are, weight loss, diarrhea, fast heart rate, anxiety, nervousness, increased sweating.
Diagnosis is based on blood tests of TSH, Free T4, and Free T3.
Treatment of both is usually medications. Below are some thyroid websites if you want more info.

I've had hyperthyroidism since I was 12. Doctors say it's genetic, passed down from ny parents.
I still can live a normal life. Not quite the same. I lose weight and gain weight frequently.
My eyes appear larger because the disease causes the eyes to bulge out. My heart pumps faster than normal about 91 beats per minute. I feel hyper and energetic sometimes, tired and fatigued very quickly. My hands are shaky sometimes and I get nervous easily. When I get sad, I'm really depressed.
When I get cold, I'm freezing. I do feel the extremes of life as you can imagine. All because of a small lump in my throat, just above the collarbone.
I hold my thyroid with two hands and swallow to make sure it's not growing larger.
Some people wish they could be me so they can have a high metabolism and be skinny. But it's not that great, I take medicine to keep it under control, Methamisole and Atenolol.
Someday the doctors will have to operate and remove my Thyroid when it becomes too big. I hope not, but it might be necessary if it gets worse.
Wish me luck,

Panic attacks are NOT a symptom of a thyroid problem. The majority of symptoms you would experience with a low thyroid function is hair loss, feeling excessively sleepy, weight gain, infertility, and in some cases depression.

There are no symptoms that are unique to hypothyroidism. There may be no symptoms early in the disease process. Long standing, untreated hypothyroidism can cause obesity, joint pain, heart disease, and infertility. Other symptoms can include:
increased sensitivity to cold
constipation
depression
If left untreated, the following symptoms can occur:
hoarseness
puffiness of the face, hands, and feet
slowed speech
you can see more information related to hypothyroid treatment through a useful book at: http://adola.net/go/hypothyroidismrevolution/
Hope for useful!

Im a Leo and it says I attract a Capricorn When down to earth, responsible, loyal Capricorn meet you, they've met their match. You are as ethical as Capricorn, and they respect your values. You are also able to be a loyal and caring partner to your Capricorn, even when times are tough. You are there to cheer up or motivate your Capricorn - which never goes unappreciated.
