Including the hip socket that is also replaced, less than 1.5 lb.

There is a newer procedure, the Birmingham Hip, but most surgeons don't like it, and only about 500 have been performed, mostly in Australia.... and most surgeons regard it as weak, where it needs to be especially strong.... time will tell if it is better in the younger patient.... (just because it is the newest, doesn't mean it is the best.) Interestingly, the prosthesis has changed little in 10 or 20 years, and the outfit in the nation with the best recovery times, best PT results, and best results are in California, Hipandpelvis.com. Hip replacement surgery in most hospitals is 2 - 3 hr surgery. These three guys do it in 1 hr, 12 minutes, and cut no soft tissue.... read the web site... and they have developed a fascinating table too... All they fix are horrible pelvis bone wrecks out of car crashes or falls, and hip replacements.... The hospital is one of the top 25 in the nation. And if you are interested, there is a 12 page description on how the surgery is done, written for docs who are going to take the seminar on how this procedure is done, and use it rather than older methods that involve 12 inch scars, and month of recovery.
