First, go buy your husband a bottle of good 'hot sauce' according to his taste.
Second, get two pounds of meat (hamburger or cut a roast up into 1/2 inch cubes) and brown your meat. Add two cans of 'red kidney beans' that you have rinsed well. Add one large (#10) can of tomatoes, cut the way you like them. That is your 'basic start' ... then add about 1/2 teaspoon of 'italian seasoning' (spice aisle, any kind), and add 2-4 tablespoons of pasilla chili or 'just plain' Chili Powder. You can also add some diced onion if you like that, and also crush or cut up one clove of garlic. When you serve this, just make sure your husband can add his own 'hot sauce' while you can dig in to the 'mild one' you've made. I know ... I didn't add any kind of 'chili peppers' but you don't really have to add those unless you have already eaten it once and have loved the flavor and heat ... if you want to add some, you can try a can of Ortega green chilis, which are very 'mild' but give an nice little 'bit of green flavor' to your chili ... but if this is your 'very first try' you could just use the recipe I gave you, and then you can add stuff as you get more 'confident' with your cooking. ENJOY!

I make my chili 11/2 lb of ground beef
1 Small yellow onion chopped
I large can of mild Chili beans (Bush's)
1 small can of mild Chili beans
1 large can of tomato sauce (Hunts)
1 small can of tomato sauce
3/4 cup of macaroni or spaghetti,(cooked) 1 can tomato soup,( optional)
green pepper,( optional)
Brown the gr beef and onion together, drain off grease. Then add all the other ingredients.Put some chili powder on the table anyone can add more to taste.
This is very mild and it was the only chili I could get my kids to eat. It has not tomato also just tomato sauce.
My husband added the tomato soup, but I like it with out it.
There are so many chili recipes around,my late Uncle Bill taught me this one!
PS you could add some green pepper chopped if you like it also, brown with your meat and onion.

Take any of the good chili recipes online and just add the hot stuff last. When I used to make my chili and my daughter was home, (She didn't like it hot) I would do everything then scoop her big bowl out then add the hot peppers or red pepper flakes or cayeene then simmer for another 5 min....So we all got what we liked!
