I just received a 1099 for consultant work I did in 2006. The 1099 is for an amount far more than I was actually paid. I am contacting the company, but it is a huge bureaucracy and I’m worried they won’t correct it. What can I do on my return to not go into poverty to pay taxes on an enormous amount of money that I was never paid.

Thanks for the help. Turns out they did it to everyone and they sent a correct 1099. I just hope it doesn't cause problems with the IRS.

Document everything, the number of times called,etc...
File an extension on your taxes until it is figured out. You may need to consult a tax attroney.

You've done the right "first thing" by contacting the company. If they can't, won't or don't fix it in a couple weeks, call the IRS.

Good luck.

Contact the payer and have a corrected one issued. If you have no luck with that, contact the IRS.
