Meditation is different from a mystical experience. I have never done drugs, so I cannot tell you for sure that the mystical experiences I've had are like drug trips or not, though from what I have read I would fancy they are.
Meditation is a discipline and does take practice. It involves breathing practices and slowing the mind--not getting caught up in thoughts, but rather being in the present moment. The feeling I get from meditation is of centeredness and peace, and those are two qualities that I'd rather did NOT stop!
I've never had a "bad trip" meditating because the mind, which is the part of a person that tends to get caught up in little tricks such as worry, guilt, and doubt, is slowed.
One of the easiest ways to start and experience meditation is with the Dances of Universal Peace. It's done in a group, it's easy and fun. And yes, after a good dance session, you can be very "high"! I've given you the link below.

has anyone ever tried meditation? Yes. The following answers refer to my experience with simple meditation using relaxation techniques. I never levitated, left my body, or talked to any god. Whether you can do any of those by practicing deeper meditation is open to question by some. I would say no.
what is it like? Calming
is it like a drug trip? No
how do you make the feeling stop? Stop meditating
how long does it last? As long as you can focus on it
how intense is the experience? Not very
can you have a "bad trip"? No

Hahahah. In my experience, meditation has never been like an acid trip. Meditation is more like.. Sitting in a dark room, focusing on your breathing, and getting lost in your own though.. You know?
You have complete control of yourself during meditation. Don't be discouraged if it doesn't "work" the first few times you try. It usually involves intense concentration, and it usually takes awhile to get used to. You -will- get the hang of it, though. And it should be easier and easier to meditate, the more you practice. You can easily come out of the "trance" by opening your eyes, focusing on your surroundings, and easing back into reality. It's actually harder to get into a meditating state, than it is to take yourself out of one. There's also plenty of different ways to meditate. There is no "right" or "wrong" way. Just experiment, you'll find a way that is comfortable for you.
And... I've never heard of a bad "meditation trip". Only bad "drug trips".
And another thing... If you're interested in Meditation, you might want to study Astral Projection and Lucid Dreaming. ...Just a thought.

Simply, Yes!
Don't get mixed up, There are many different kind of meditation. No matter what kind, we find that peaceful meditation on good thoughts must have some good effects.
I don't think the rules here allow me to make some scathing attack at some particular "Brand" of meditation. But, Watch out! If there is a spiritual world, and there are spirits, then it's possible that if just "empty out your consciousness", and repeat some "mantra" a word or name which you have no idea what it might be, you could be setting yourself up for some spirit or demon possession- unbeknownst! Laugh if you want, but it happens.
On the other hand meditating on God's word, can have a wonderful effect on your life, your mind, and your uderstanding.
If you're only in it for some kind of rush, or some kind of high..well even several thousand years ago they referred to God as "THE MOST HIGH" and some Colombian cartel is definately never gonna control Him. He's the ULTIMATE! Try Him, you might like Him!--Sionarra

Buddhist meditation is about either learning how to calm the mind and notice how thoughts are "fleeting" (shamatha) or analytical, etc. I do it daily and it's very calming by default. The experience is what you put into it, if your mind is unsettled or you're exhausted, or tripping on drugs then you'll have a session that goes along with that state of mind (i.e. you'll either be too wired to focus on the object of meditation, you'll fall asleep or you'll feel like you're on a "bad trip").
There are many books available on the market if you're interested in further research. Grab up on one and you'll find out about the various types of meditation out there besides the Buddhist perspective.

Yes I have along with millions. TM meditation for example (which I think is the best for beginners) you must do for 20 minutes twice a day. After a year of practice you become this person you will not recognise. You become someone really cool, devoid of venom, most stress removed from your nervous system, and you wonder how you lived without meditation before.
Try it but I warn you don't expect to feel any results before 12 months of assiduous practice.

There are different levels of meditation. Medititation is beautiful because it helps relax your mind and body. The intenseness and length is up to you. I never heard of having a bad trip while meditating, unless your doing something else while your meditating. ;-)

Meditating on God's Word, yes. It allows you to think through the tough theological issues and arrive at an understanding.
