I believe this is the story: On one occasion, the apostle John felt so impressed by a magnificent vision of heavenly Jerusalem that he fell down to worship before the feet of the angel who had served as God’s spokesman. “Be careful!” the angel told him. “Do not do that! All I am is a fellow slave of you and of your brothers who are prophets and of those who are observing the words of this scroll. Worship God.” (Rev. 22:8, 9)
Well, thats what misleading is about...

The vatican already believes he is christs advocate here on earth..among other things. Check into their own writings etc about who they believe the pope is....that is why they bow to him..they would rather believe the vatican than the Bible.
Read revelation then regarding the beast..it says it is a man who thinks to change times and laws...etc....that has already been done by a pope..they changed the ten commandments..took out regarding worshipping idols etc.and split one in 2 to make it look like 2 commandments. They changed the sabbath that jesus taught from saturday to sunday..all 100 percent against Gods instructions..yet they claim the right to do so..
That is why they bow to the pope..they believe he has been given Christs power on earth..it is in their own writings.

If you bow to a king- someone who deserves respect- are you automatically elevating him to God-like status? No, it's just showing respect. So if you bow to the Pope, you're just showing respect, not necessarily worship. There's a difference bewteen bows of respect and bows of worship. And nobody hails the Pope as God anyway. (i'm Catholic and believe me, that would be insane.)

They shouldn't be doing it...
Jesus also said to call no other man Father except for God, but the pope is referred to as Holy Father and priests are referred to as Father.
When the church is entrusted with the privilege and responsibility
for man's spiritual knowledge and growth, they will bear the great-er responsibility when giving account one day, just as parents who do not raise their children as God intended, will have to answer for it as well.
We will be judged according to the TRUTH we know and what we have done with it, ESPECIALLY when it comes to accepting
Jesus as Savior and Lord.

Christians are to bow to the king. If some people bow to the Pope; hopefully they see him as king.
