3 months ago my mother ended up in ER, they said it was high blood pressure (her symptoms were those of a heart attack).
Total amount for 1 night stay is $14,000. She does not qualify for Medical, (she overstayed her VISA). She called the hospital to negotiate the amount, (like a payment plan) but the billing department said they do not work that way.
Can they go after my dad's wages if they find out they are legally married. Help!! She does want to pay, they saved her life; but the amount is just outrageous

It is because of people who "do not want to pay" that the bills are so high. None of uslikes to pay, but why should you be the one who gets to weasle out of it?

this isn't good but you can get away from paying a hospital bill for years and they won't garnish your paycheck. I know this because I used to help close escrow accounts after the title recording process and most of those people had really really old judgements on past hospital bills that were never paid. Also, try to find a non profit group that helps with this type of thing. I don't know where you are but
beehive.org
is a good resource and it gives links to lots of places. Talk to someone at the hospital as some have special scholarship type programs for ppl that don't have insurance and need help. If the person you speak with is rude ask to speak to the next one up and so forth.

they can go after your dad if they are legally married
they can put a lien on any property, garnish wages etc
you should have talked to the social worker
every patient should have one assigned to them if not ask to see one
they may be able to help her negotiate payment or arrange for medicaid in case there are more problems in the future
unfortunately you have 2 options now
borrow the money and repay it or hire a lawyer to work out the details with the hospital
i have known people in communities who held benefits for those who needed similar help paying high medical bills
check with your church to see if that is possible

Since your parents are legally married I think they can go after your dad's wages. I'm surprised that they won't work out a payment plan.
Here's an idea, take out a loan to pay for the medical expenses. Then work out a payment plan with the bank to pay off the loan.

Depending on what state you live in she maybe eligable for more help from the good old US. If not there are some hospital programs that they have set aside to help with medical bills when you are unable to pay them. Do not talk to the bill department talk to someone in the business office and ask them about any programs that may be able to help you out. Good Luck and God Bless.

Most hospitals have have a charitable fund that assists people with no medical insurance. Contact a Social worker at the hospital to find out how they can assist with paying this bill. Also, I doubt that your father's wages can be garished because your mother accrued a debt, but it's possible depending on the circumstances.

That is correct. If your mother does not pay that obscene amount of money they may garnish your fathers paycheck in order to compensate for the services rendered. I don't know what state you live in, but in California there is a plan called "MAPA" that is designed for people with a low level of income. The other options their is is to get a loan. Sorry, but this problem exceeds my level of expertize. I hope all works well for you and your mother.
