I don't get these people who say we should leave Iraq because the majority of its citizens don't want us there. What's that got to do with anything? The Germans or Japanese didn't want us there after WWII at first either. Had we left I'm sure they would have resumed slaughtering Jews and Chinesse. When we left Vietnam they went back to slaughtering and they killed 15 million people! If we leave the job unfinished in Iraq won't the same thing happen?

What most people aren't saying (but it is true that), most iraqi's do not want us to leave. I just left iraq and the innocents in iraq realize that if we leave, then chaos will occur. There will be mass killings. Sunni's killing Shia, Shia killing Sunni's, Kurds being killed by shia and sunni's. The only people that want us out are the thugs that are causing all the violence. There is a very vocal minority that wants us to leave. The vast majority of people there are relieved when we are present in their neighborhood.

Dude, ya need to read history... You cannot equate nor compare World War II with our INVASION of a sovereign country. As for Vietnam? We had no business there either....and as soon as we leave Iraq, the killing fields will return. That's what our country does...we invade and interfere in other peoples business, then pull out and let them kill each other.

Iraq is not a "winnable" war, period. Never was. The Imams and the religious sects have been warring each other for a thousand years...democracy won't work there until the citizens get over the religion thing..and that ain't gonna happen. We are pouring money down a black hole and allowing our troops to be shot up, killed and wounded and have been responsible for tens of thousand Iraqi civilian deaths...all for nothing..nothing will be changed.

Spend some time reading history of that area of the world and, indeed, U.S. history and you will have your question answered comprehensively.

Sadly in Iraq it seems to be happening anyway.....

and before the invasion Irak was a dictature, but not religion extremism, in fact it was one of the few countries in that are in wich christians had not big problems and one of the most important minister was christian, Tareq Aziz (try to find another muslim country with a christian in the government..)

the difference is that times changed between WW2 and today, today there are international laws, but anyway German leaders were processed in Norimberga for war crimes, and not only for lagers, but also for invasions of neutral countries without any reason and ignoring international treaties.....

Well, TODAY military bases are often not really loved by people in Europe(probably because of they are really sensitive to the theme of peace), especially if the base is of a foreign Armed Force.

In Italy (and i think it's the same in Germany) nobody(or anyway a very very few) "hates"(I mean they maximum want them go home) Americans but sometimes people get annoyed of some arrogant behaviours of the Americans(of course not all americans, but some of them).
It's strange, but around French, British, Canadian, Belgian, Nederland bases in Italy there is never this feeling probably because they are more rispectous.
For example some years ago(I don't know if today is the same) American fighter planes were used not to respect Italian security altitude and they performed really low altitude pass in our vallyes(I saw a video filmed by a friend of mine from a little hill that shows an F-16 flying lower than my friend position while minimum security altitude is about 700m)
And people used to think that one day they(unresponsable pilots) will probably had caused a disaster.
In fact they did! But when an American Prowler cut the cable of the Ropeway of Cermis in 1998, killing 20 people, a few of people said "yankee go home" but Not the majority did the same. But ALL wanted the pilot responsable of that disaster to pay (If he was an Italian civil pilot he would have been sent to prison), so they wanted justice, but nobody gave justice to the families of the victims.
And in everyday life some are also annoied because they have strange privileges, for example cars of AFI (allied forces in Italy) can not be mulcted and removed also when parked in front of a gate, so some do it, and it's easy to understand that one that everyday find an AFI car blocking his gate may have no good feelings towards Americans(in that city the base is american, so don't try say that it can be also British or French :-)) militaries.(also this is a true story, a person told me this directly)
Also near my house there is a small American Base, and there is no any ostile sentiment..(probably the fact that it's so small helps because 100 people can cause surely less problems than 10000).
In Germany there are a lot of American Bases, much more than here in Italy, so if there are problems these can be caused and amplified by the larger ammount of troops and bases.
I hope not to have gone outside the theme......

I think the problem with that is that this is a completely different war - one that was based on (after the wmd story didn't work) on 'liberating' the Iraqi people.

During WW2 we never cared about 'liberating' the Germans or the Japanese - our goal was simply to defeat them militarily.

The point is it's hard to 'liberate' people who want to kill you and think that YOU are the reason we don't have liberty.

Recent reports of several Iraqi generals being involved in the complex kidnapping operation which killed 5 of our guys, underscore that point - we are giving them billions of dollars and tons of munitions - while they want to kill us or to get out. This kind of makes the current strategy of 'working with the Iraqis' pretty difficult and not sustainable.

hope that helps!
