I think they are VERY common...almost everyone I know gets them at one time or another...it's a virus that stays with you for life...BUT....
I REALLY wanted you to know that you can EASILY never have to deal with another horrible, awful, nasty cold-sore for the rest of your life!!
I got them every winter my whole life until 3 years ago (I'm 36 now) and they were the BANE of my existence...the whole process took weeks to heal and would leave a scar for at least 2 months sometimes!
I was reading a message board on www.curezone.org and discovered the PERFECT remedy for both healing them and preventing them completely:
OLIVE LEAF EXTRACT
http://curezone.com/foods/oliveleaf.html...
So, I buy the liquid tincture by "HerbPharm" and it has not failed me ONCE...Whenever I'm feeling drained, tired, stressed, or get that tingly feeling on my lip, I just load up on this stuff.
This is the one I buy: http://www.myvitanet.com/olleafex1ozh.ht...
You can also get Olive Leaf at Whole Foods Market, and other natural food stores.
Very cheap.
The first time I tried it, I was actually halfway into a major eruption and I drank a bunch of the extract in some water.
AS I WAS DRINKING the stuff down, I could feel the swelling on my lip shrinking...I was in such shock--I ran to the mirror--it was shrinking before my eyes and within ten minutes my lip had returned to NORMAL...I began kissing the bottle of Olive Leaf...yeah, I really did!!
I had tried everything in the past...I can't begin to tell you the WARS I had with these evil sores!
Well, I can finally say: I WON !!!

Cold sores is known as the herpes simplex. It is usually caused by a virus. Most times it is contracted through sexual contact, when one meets with someone who is having an out-break.either on their genitalia or on their mouth. The virus is then transmitted through physical contact. It is not know to be infectious when there is no eruption. So the best thing to do is not to kiss someone who has an outbreak on their mouths and do not have sexual contact with someone who has any form of cold sores around their genitalia.Zovirax,is a good cream that heals it within a few days.
You might have some vitamin deficiency if you have chapped lips and cold sores while you're pregnant. No, it is not normal to have cold sores when you have chapped lips or during pregnancy.Consult your doctor.

I have one now, it's due to stress, and the weather. Everyone gets them from what I've seen, everyone in the world has a strain of herpes, how bad it gets is really up to how well you treat yourself. A Cold sore every now and then is normal. Giant clusters all over the surrounding area of your lip, not so much. Shower often, ointment, dab it with milk, petroleum jelly, and do NOT touch it. A week and a half is the normal maximum it should be there, 4-5 days if treated properly. It's normal! ^^

dip a small piece of cloth in whole milk and hold it on the cold sores for 2 minutes 4 times a day. It will help. A peppermint oil lip balm like Burt's Bees helps, too.

Cold sores are common, and they may have a tendency to occur more when your lips are chapped. I've read that they tend to pop up during times when your body is stressed. Check out the following websites for more information on cold sores.

They're 'normal' in the sense that most people will have them once or twice in their life; more often if they're run-down; and they are a variety of shingles/herpes and therefore infectious, which means that they can infect your partner (hence, don't kiss). By the way, you don't have to do anything sexual to acquire them (I mentioned that because I used the h- word).
The best cure is an ointment called Zovirax, but if you're getting them a lot and they're not going away, see your doctor before they become an annoyingly constant part of your life.
