No, I don't think we should be armed. I am a police officer and I would dread it if it were even being considered. However, I am in favour of arming all officers with a Taser as a supplement to our Personal Protective Equipment as an item to support or go to, before having to draw out CS spray or racking out a baton and striking a suspect.
- Why do I not support us being armed? Because it is expensive, prohibitively so, especially in terms of training.
- It gives criminals more incentive and makes it a necessity for them to be armed in the commission of offences, placing people's lives in danger.
- It means there are more firearms out there to steal and be taken off us should we be seriously injured.
- Makes large numbers of the public more afraid of police attendance due to them believing we will shoot people unlawfully and thus, make us less approachable to the public.
- The current state of affairs regarding the immediate suspension of a constable after having shot and killed a person and a prolonged investigation will mean that police officers will hesistate in the use of a firearm and thus place lives at risk.
- The level of gun crime in the UK is very very low and people being the victims of gun crime is very rare.
- The risk to officers from death by firearms, although moderate, the actual risk of death is very low. PC Sharon Beshenivsky was one of the very few officers to have died from firearms. A number have died from knife attacks in the past decade, but the number one killer are cars and unsafe drivers, driving carelessly or recklessly. Doesn't mean that police officers should drive tanks and that we should be armoured up like Robocop to prevent injury to us, now does it?

I think the British Government needs to wake up and in its duty protect police officers by giving them the correct equipment and proper training to deal with today's threats. Gun crime is on the up its a fact.
Were not in the good old days any more police officers have lost there lives shot, stabbed etc in the line of duty protecting the public. The police should be one step ahead not two behind.

the argument for non-lethal tazers is a strong one and i would support the police in carrying them . I do not want to see our police routinely armed at all. I would also support the trained and licenced use of pepper spray for certain groups of civilians who might be at particular risk such as Community Support Officers or security guards that operate the armoured cash vans, I do not support the availability to the general public of pepper or mace sprays though before anyone says that i am a idiot for wanting widespread public access to offencive weapons

absolutely not..i do not believe that the police should carry arms..thats not because ive done anything wrong..but i think that the police in this country will shoot first and ask questions later. re the poor brazillian guy who got caught up in the july bombings ..in the uk we have always lived with the terrorist threat from the ira and we managed to survive it....i dont think responding in a panic just because the us are under fire means that we should respond so..

I suppose in one way it could be a damn good deterrent and wake up call for criminals out there. I wouldn't want to think i could get shot for robbing somewhere or stealing something and running off. But then again, would we see gun related crime rise and would it soon become legal to have handguns in our house with a permit? god knows. I suppose one day they will try it and we'll find out.

The UK police have shot several people over the years including the Brazilian and every single one was an innocent person. With statistics like that just think what will happen if they were all armed. People will get shot daily.

Certainly not, from the amount of innocent people they have shot they have not got the brains to know who the good guys are from the baddies.
