You can, but you will miss out on the tax changes for 2005 and 2006. One tax change is the joint filing. There are several more, but I don't know your status in living.

I wouldn't. The IRS typically changes the format of the tax form from year to year. For instance this year you can take a standard deduction for federal excise tax paid on long distance phone calls.
