Actually God himself commanded several statues be carved. One was the golden serpent in Exodus and the other also from the book of exodus were Cherubim for the Ark of the covenant.
The problem is a matter of the heart. Your heart needs to be first and foremost God's and just like the American flag dips to no other. We should not put any statue or picture of anyone even Jesus Himself above the worship of the real, living, loving God Almighty.

Exodus 20:4, 5 states: “You must not make for yourself a carved image or a form like anything that is in the heavens above or that is on the earth underneath or that is in the waters under the earth. You must not bow down to them nor be induced to serve them.”
Even angels know their places...On one occasion, the apostle John felt so impressed by a magnificent vision of heavenly Jerusalem that he fell down to worship before the feet of the angel who had served as God’s spokesman. “Be careful!” the angel told him. “Do not do that! All I am is a fellow slave of you and of your brothers who are prophets and of those who are observing the words of this scroll. Worship God.” (Rev. 22:8, 9)

This is going to be hard for Catholics to accept, because they are being taught by priests, bishops, cardinals, and the pope; to pray "in the name of" Saints and even Mary - the mother of Jesus Christ.
However, the Bible; which is God's Words of instructions to us. Clearly tells us DO NOT pray "in the name of Mary or any saint" - is IDOLOTARY - I don't care what the church officials have told you - God SAYS it is idol worship.

What does the Bible say about TV or cars or jet travel or computers? We experience life beyond what was written thousands of years ago in the Bible.
Catholics to not bow and pray to statues. They pray to the person the statue represents. The statue or picture helps them remember that person.
When you have a picture of someone who has died, that picture is not the person.

Check out Psalm 115-
3 Our God is in heaven;
he does whatever pleases him.
4 But their idols are silver and gold,
made by the hands of men.
5 They have mouths, but cannot speak,
eyes, but they cannot see;
6 they have ears, but cannot hear,
noses, but they cannot smell;
7 they have hands, but cannot feel,
feet, but they cannot walk;
nor can they utter a sound with their throats.
8 Those who make them will be like them,
and so will all who trust in them.

If you are referring to statues in Catholic churches. People do not pray to the statues, they are there for decoration.
