by medical assistant I presume that you mean medication aide. if this is the case then yes in most areas there are limitations on what a medication aide can administer. Here in Texas they cannont administer any inhalers, nebulizar medications, (albuterol, atrovent, pulmocort, xopenex) nor can they do anything pertaining to a needle. Only licensed nurses or doctors are allowed to give shots. As to whether or not they are legally able to administer psychotropic medicatons it depends on the state in which they are licensed as well as the facility in which they are employed. Medication aides in a couple of the facilities that I have visited and been a part of do allow the medication aide to administer psychotropic drugs under the supervision of a licensed professional.
