I am trying to understand how the law works, just curious.

Below is a link to a horrendous crime that happened locally.

Two ppl were kidnapped, tortured and murdered. What I am trying to understand is if 2 ppl were killed, how can a suspect be charged with 16 counts of murder? I don't disagree with it, I think they probably can't punish them enough for the crime, I am just trying to figure out how it counts more than once since they "only" kill someone once?

Help me understand here... thanks

You are counting the number of dead people, 2, but the prosecuting attorney looks at all of the various charges, which could be anything from First Degree Murder to Manslaughter, to Assault with Intent to Kill. If the person on trial has 16 different charges against him for these 2 'murdered people' then the prosecutor really wants to 'put him away for as long as he can' and is 'seeding the deck' with as many 'appropriate charges' as possible in the hopes that if some don't 'stick' others will. The jury will have to vote separately on each charge, not just simply say 'guilty' or 'not guilty' ...

no longer in basic terms can they, it has got here approximately various cases that I somewhat have study (interior the interior sight newspaper). in one case, it replaced right into a single punch. guy hit sufferer, sufferer went down and hit head. sufferer died from the recommendations harm. result: Manslaughter and detention center. One punch. For those of you asserting this could be self-protection, that doesn't inevitably artwork. For self protection you desire to be in a concern the place you may no longer in basic terms stroll away. in case you get in a controversy with somebody, you often have numerous opportunities to stroll away. If the combat starts off to bypass actual you need to use the needed tension to shelter your self - yet whilst the prospect to disengage is accessible and you do no longer take it then this is "mutual wrestle" and not self-protection. Self-protection is a very difficult challenge.
