I've never been horrified by it. I pity athiests and are sadden that someone could be so lost, but not horrified.
I must admit that the athiest I have dealt with over the years have been bitter and generally not nice, unhappy people. It doesn't leave me with much desire to hang around them for any amount of time. They are good for a nice debate from time to time, but I get tired of them trying to bait me and then not listening to my reply.

I'm not horrified. I think atheist are amusing.
Example:
This site is "religion and spirituality". So if you don't believe in God then you don't believe in religion.(religion being the evidence of believers)
And if you don't believe in God (a spiritual being) then you wouldn't believe in spirituality.
So why are they on this site?
If they think they're having fun poking at the believers I'd have to say it only encourages and strengthens the believers, so go ahead!
I really believe they aren't atheist they're just not sure what to believe. Hopefully they will find and answer here.
Glad you guys are out there!!!

Atheism doesn't "horrify" me exactly...
It does break my heart. It does make me weep for those poor people who have gotten sucked into believing that atheism is somehow more "intellectual".
Atheism is also a religion, since it must be based on faith...since there is no empirical proof that no God exists. There are even "churches" being set up for atheists...
Go figure...

My friend Tim lived with me for seven years helping me while I was badly disabled,he did not believe in God, I never tried to change his mind,he went to church with me sometimes though, he had his way I had mine, when he died, I asked God to please be with Tim. I Loved Tim.,and God told me in my mind that he loves all of his Creation and he loved Tim too, and that brought some tears to my eyes.all my people or really great true Christians I never have heard a word about atheists,I have never heard one word against anyone as a matter of fact and this includes grandparents uncles aunts & cousins, my brother sometimes would put down a race of people but not us.
I wish you the very best .no matter what you believe or disbelieve.

They think society will collapse without the supreme being, the Jews actually state this in their creed that there is a life force provided and without it everything will cease. Its deeply en-grained in society, to follow the church higher power, the whole "god bless America" is pure superstition

I don't think most people are horrified by it. Less than you might think. As long as the atheists don't try to interfere with the rights of Christians or other religions I have no problem with them. It's their life and their soul to do with what they please.

I think they're horrified by it because it stands in stark opposition to what they believe. I suspect that is why people focus on it. There is some comfort in the fear of something opposite one's beliefs, after all. It serves in a way to confirm theism.

I wonder what the response of the faithful is to agnosticism, however. I would be curious to know that.
