Depends on the nature of the charge, previous convictions and the state where he was arrested. If it's a first time possession charge, it will likely be thrown out. If it's a first time intent-to-distribute charge, it will likely be knocked down to a simple possession charge.
Go to www.norml.org - they have a breakdown of the various laws in the country for the individual states. Whatever your friend does, he should NOT take the advice of Yahoo Answers posters to plead one way or the other. Your question does not provide enough information for anyone to give a serious opinion on that issue.

I got a possesion ticket when i was 18 I live in California and I plede guilty. I had to take 10 MA classes, write an essay, and pay a 50 dollar fine. I you are an adult and its your first time offence and if you have nothing on your record, and you live in cali then most likely you will receive the same verdict. If you have other drug offence or other offence at all that might give you a bad rap I would get an attorny. Also they always ask you if you would like an attorny appointed to you and the begining so if you dont want to talk to the judge just get appointed an attorny at the court house. It cost nothing, and most of the time they are always in the same court rooms, so they know the judge pretty well. And they know the more technical stuff. Hope that helped

The court appointed lawyer should be able to help him decide.
Often they will let a first time offender do parole, rather than crowding the jails.
