Yes you have to pay the state tax of the state you live in unless you are active duty military then you are aloud to claim the state you lived in before joining

Every state is different, so you'd have to check with both states to be sure. If it works anything like here in NY, NJ and CT, you have to file a state income tax return to the state in which you live, and the state in which you work (the domicile state of your employer, not the physical location where you work). However, NY credits me the amount I pay to CT, so I'm not actually paying double the amount. Unfortunately, I still somehow always end up owing CT at least a couple of hundred dollars.

Of course you do! But since you didn't work in VA, you do NOT pay VA tax.
