Cats are easier to own if you leave alot, they use a litter box and dont get as lonely and wreck stuff. You can leave a bowl of food and they wont wolf the whole thing down at once like a dog. I think people who like cats think they are more respectable than dogs, as they will not make idiots of themselves like dogs will. Their independent spirit appeals to the rebel in us. Their purr soothes the soul thus returning love without a sloppy slurp. They get lost when you dont want them around. The ancient egyptians were right.

Ok ... so I'll be the advocate for the other side then. Can you successful keep a healthy betta in a bowl? Yes, without a doubt. I have done it for years and continue to do it today.... literally thousands of them over the 20+ years I have been keeping, breeding and showing bettas. Yes, my show fish stay in bowls and yes, I do win at shows. Also, I'm not the only one, the majority of other IBC show competitors I know do it the same way I do. I have had bettas live 5 years in a bowl and that's actually quite good. That 7 year number is misleading, that's extremely rare and has far more to do with genetics than anything else. I change 100% of the water in the bowls every other day and it stays cleaner that anyone's tank. I'll be glad to put my bettas water up against any established tank out there. Now, is a bowl the right thing for a new hobbyist or a lazy hobbyist? No, a filtered tank is far superior for that situation, however, I personally know what I'm doing with bettas and take offense to being told I'm irresponsible. ADDITION: I was referring stricting to the Bettas I keep and breed at home, not in the shop or in the breeding facilities at the school. In my shop, Bettas are placed in a wall rack style tank system that allows each fish 1 gallon of filtered, heated water. Yes, it is a central system for all of the "tanks" but as I quarantine bettas before putting them on the sales floor and only buy from IBC breeders for my sales stock, the risk is very, very small. Would I keep a Betta in a teacup? No, but a bowl is larger than that. I did once keep a betta in a 32 oz drinking cup for 4 days when it was given to me unexpectedly while I was on a trip. Didn't lose the fish and not the first fin curl or split. At the school the smallest thing we have any bettas in would be a 10 gallon tank. Oh... you will not find a bowl for sale in my shop. The smallest thing we sell is a 2.5 gallon minitank. I don't advocate the pet batta keeper using a bowl at all, but I don't think just because you raise Bettas in bowls you are automatically irresponsible. As a side note we don't sell chinese algae eaters, redtail catfish, pacu (any of the "tank-busters) any dyed, painted or tattooed fish etc. I might or might not go broke, but I don't support irresponsible fish keeping in any form. I like how they learn good manners from their mother and we don't really need to teach them anything. Although, I've never had a kitten so I could be wrong ;) Ours are older cats from the RSPCA.
I like how they aren't in your face all the time and are very much creatures of routine. Though sometimes, that can be what is alluring about dogs. I love dogs and cats but we only have two cats at this time because we found that we didn't have the time for a dog. Two cats fit perfectly in our lifestyle. They know our routine and are happy with it. They keep each other company and active also. THAT'S what I love about cats.
They are just so funny to watch when they interact with each other also.

I have 4 cats, all with very different personalities, and 2 dogs. The difference are how they react to human behavior. Cats think they own you and take care of you, along with owning the house. Dogs are more apt to want to please you, they are more out for the attention and especially if there is a treat involved. That's why dogs make better companions. Unlike cats...who have to have everything on their terms. I'm more of a cat person, but the dogs compliment the cats. Then add the chinchilla and she runs the show.

Dogs generally more friendly and approachable than cats. Dogs will greet you and always 'be in your face'. If you can handle the attention get a dog. One good thing about dogs are that they can (and should) be trained. Cats, however, are more sophisticated and may seem aloof. Cats will let you know when they want to interact with you. I have not heard of cats being trained. Essentially with cats, they are the master. With dogs, you are the master.

Note that there are some cats that think (and act like) they are a dog and some dogs that think (and act like) they are a cat.

Well dogs have to be walked outside in all wether. Cats just use a litter box. Most dogs will eat till they throw up and then eat the throw up. Most cats you can put a bowl of food out and they nibble at it all day. Dogs tend to give people headaches with there barking. Cats have quieter voices. Most dogs will scare people away with there viciousness. Cats tend to hide when people come there for creating a more welcomeing environment.

Cats are cleaner animals and are much more self-sufficient that dogs, which usually require daily walks and grooming. Cats are a much better choice than dogs for older people and those with smaller living quarters, as well as first time animal owners for the above reasons.

There is no "better" animal though, just a matter of perference, good and bad attributes for both.

There are lots of great traits about cats, but whether it makes them better than dogs i don't know. I would like to say cats are better than dog for a few reasons cats don't smell bad if there left out in the rain, they aren't dumb enough to do stupid tricks for a treat (unless they want to!), they don't have to be taken for walks, they don't have to be let out to do there business, they can climb trees much better, and you can leave for a few days and your cat won't rip apart your couch or belongings, just leave them lots of food and water a clean litter box or two and your good to go. Just my opinion though!

I don't know why more people like dogs better than cats, because I am certainly a cat person. All my friends like dogs better than cats, but they never say why.

Cats don't have to be walked to do their business. They fit on your lap. Plus, in my opinion, a purr beats a wagging tail and a dripping tongue any day.
Not that I've got anything against dogs, I've been known to be very fond of several dogs, but I am primarily a cat person.
