Definitely. Some more than others, like erythromycin. Read the directions, some antibiotics you must take with food, some you have to take on an empty stomach. Some antibiotics, like the tetracycline drugs, you cannot take with dairy products. Then there are some antibiotics that some people just can't tolerate. You need to let your doctor know, and possibly switch to another antibiotic.

Most prescriptions for antibiotics are for 3 a day for 14 days. People develop diarrhea long before finishing the antibiotics. Doctors instruct you you need to take the entire prescription to ensure the infection is killed. You need to take probiotics(beneficial bacteria to counter-balance) the bad bacteria. Go to a pharmacy and ask the pharmacist for probiotics. Request the ones that are refrigerated as they last longer. Follow the directions on the bottle. If you take 3 antibiotics a day, you should take 2 probiotics with or without the antibiotics. There are several brands of over-the-counter medicines for diarrhea. Choose one of these medicines to try to improve your diarrhea. I do not think doctors are taught in medical school to use probiotics, so maybe this is why hardly any doctor recommends taken probiotics with antibiotics. Harrald

Never heard of an antibiotic curing an upset stomach, but have heard of them causing one. Did they explain what the medicine would do? Or what is causing the pain?

It's a well known fact that anti-bio tics can cause stomach distress and diarrhea ,they not only kill the bad bacteria ,but also destroy the good bacteria ,in order to stabilize the good & bad bacteria in the intestines take Acidophilus to help maintain the efficient functioning of the digestive system ---

Absolutely, especially if you're taking something like Erythromyicin, if you don't have food in your stomach you will have severe stomach pains. But, your pharmacist should have warned you of this.

this depends upon the duration of antibiotic intake, its type. some certainly interact with the half life of other when having co morbidities like renal failure, hepatic failure, and on enzyme inducers like warfarin, barbiturates, rifampicin etc. make sure you go and see your doc.
