It's not alcohol, per se. There's an old Puritan tradition dating way back, and also now exemplified in some of the more fundamental evangelical Christians -
If it feels good, it must be sinful.
This, of course, is counter-productive, because by making some sort of sinful, forbidden fruit, we're making it into some kind of big-time temptation, and, of course, those who are younger will just HAVE to find out what the big deal is all about. Instead of looking at it as something that can be used responsibly and in moderation, we've enhanced the likelihood that inexperienced users will go nuts, and without the benefit of an open, social environment where there can be some control or supervision.
If you think we're afraid of alcohol, just look at our schizophrenic attitudes towards sex, which saturates all of our pop culture, but is more feared amongst the bible-thumpers than the devil himself.
And we have similar disasterous results in things like "astinence only" sex "education" programs.

There is nothing biblical about drinking....The reason why Americans fear alcohol so much is not really a fear at all... Instead it is a philosophy generated to keep control on the masses...Of course everyone knows that kids are drinking....but if you say that they are drinking illegally....well then, it's not an "American"...problem...or so they think...
And let me end by saying that foolish philosophies bring on false securities....I am also from Europe and drinking a glass of wine with dinner is a normal thing to do....Interestingly enough.... You don't see many kids hiding liquor from their parents... and going out and getting hammered as north American kids do...(There's no reason for that as alcohol is accessible to them....I was recently in Europe and found that kids prefer to drink coca cola and seven-up.....

No it is because of the immaturity of todays average teen. And Im sure its no different over there its just that people dont give a ****, which isnt exactly the best thing in the world. Kids are stupid enough as it is being able to legally buy alcohol isnt going to help any AT ALL.
