About 9 years ago my cat broke its back leg in two places and had a steel plate screwed in to help it heal. It is now limping badly and has a large groath on that leg. He does not seem to be in pain. It this due to artheritis? My vet said not to worry if it is not in distress.

your cat sounds pretty distressed to me. get him to the vet. try an alternative vet if need be. the growth sounds very dodgy. though he probably has got an arthritic leg after his break.

If he has a growth on his leg he needs to be seen by a vet.
It may be that the screws are pushing against his skin from the inside or he may have an abscess.
Clearly he is in discomfort and you really should have him seen by a vet.
