Yahweh was a war-god. They needed a war-god at the time. Baal was a god of farming or some such nonsense.

Yahweh, meaning, "I AM WHO I AM" offers a more existentially complete interpretation for life/humanity than baal=husband/screw me so there is a corn crop next yearl Fertility religions were demeaning and so much manipulative magic. It doesn't work over the long haul - though Madison Avenue would have us believe otherwise.

Yah just happened to work his way up to the top of the pantheon and then he made the commandment to have no other Gods before him. Most people don't realize that the ancient people back in those days had many Gods, and Yah was just one of many. I don't know why exactly he became their favorite. Maybe because he was the most ruthless of the lot and therefore the most feared.

When Moses asked God "What should I tell the people if they ask me of your name? (Exodus 3:13-15)
God gave his name as a guarantee...because the people were giving name to their gods...God chose his own name which has great relevance to his characteristic, Yahweh/Jehovah is the transliterated form of the four-letter Hebrew word 'to be.' God's name is the verb 'to be' which means “I SHALL PROVE TO BE WHAT I SHALL PROVE TO BE.”
Micah 4:5 For all the peoples, for their part, will walk each one in the name of its god; but we, for our part, shall walk in the name of Jehovah our God to time indefinite, even forever.
