if you're on BT, why not use their "choose to refuse" service. Then the call is blocked.
It was free but someone from BT will no doubt chip in now and provide the nth degree of detail. I bet there's a BT leaflet on it too. But then I recall there's a BT leaflet on everything, including making phone calls from a orbiting space station.
You can also sign up for the Telephone Preference Service. Look in your phone book for more details. There's a lot of detail in there and even advice on how to deal with *!$%"s who call you up and try and sell you crap you don't need.
You know it's probably some marketing muppets. Who else do you think it would be...? If it were your mother, I don't think she would give up as easily as an autodialer.
If they're calling you on a mobile, then "why don't you just switch off your mobile and go and do something less boring instead".
If you're sad and want people to call you, log off Yahoo answers, go to the pub and meet people.
There you go. All sorted.

Phone your telephone company and give them the number and they'll tell you what it is. They wont tell you the exact name but they will say "it's a phone company or an electric company" etc

Ring BT and explain, they will sort it out for you and possibly tell you who is calling.

It's your mom. She's trying to tell you to quit asking stupid questions on yahoo.
Did you think to call the number back? If that didn't work for you, how could it work for anyone else?

Easy! When you answer the phone, say, "hello - who is calling please?". They should then give you your required answer.
