Don't try to stop crying, it is going to hurt for a long time. Even though it hurts like hell, remember the good times. Remember how Peanut used to jump on your lap, lick your face. Remember that sideways look he always gave you when he wasn't sure how you were feeling. Remember the walks, the tug of war with your favorite sock, the yipping bark when someone knocked on the door. This wasn't just a dog, this was family, this was your special man; this was the animal that loved you no matter what you did or said.
Miss him all you want, cry as much as you need to, always keep him in your memory.
My heart aches with yours, I have already lost one of my 3, and the other two are seniors with many health problems.

Read the poem, cry some more. Check out the links.
But NEVER!!!! forget the good times you had with Peanut and the joy that he brought into the world.

I'm really sorry about your loss. I've been there and I know what it feels like. The fact that you can't stop crying is normal. There's nothing that anyone can do or say to comfort you right now. Allow yourself to cry as long as you need. Time does heal but things are never the same. You did the right thing for your dog. I can only imagine how hard it was for you,but Peanut is in a better place now. I wish you all the best. Think that maybe somewhere at your local shelter there might be a "Peanut" who needs a loving home and a great owner like you ! Good luck !

A lady at my work had to have her cat put down over the weekend and she received a really lovely poem called "A Pet's Prayer" from the vet. I looked on the Internet for the author but can't seem to find who wrote it.
A Pet's Prayer
If it should be that I grow frail and weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep
Then, you must do what must be done
For this, the last battle, can't be won.
Don't let grief stay your hand,
For this day, more than the rest,
Your love and friendship stand the test.
We've had so many happy years,
What is to come can hold no fear.
You'd not want me to suffer, so
When the time comes, please let me go.
Take me where my needs they'll tend,
Only, stay with me to the end
And hold me firm and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see.
I know in time you will see it is a kindness you do for me
Although my tail its last has waved
From pain and suffering I've been saved.
Don't grieve it should be you who this thing decides to do.
We've been so close, we two, these years,
Don’t let your heart hold any tears.
Smile, For We Walked Together For A While

I lost my best friend (my dog) three years ago. It was the hardest thing I"ve ever gone through. Take comfort in knowing your dog will be better off. There are few days that pass that I don't think of my little buddy, but believe me time heals. I adopted a dog from the pound about a year after, she had a horrible life before and now I care for her and she is in a happy home and spoiled. I do this in memory of my old dog. Her little face makes it all worthwhile.

I'm so sorry for your loss. It is so hard to lose a pet because they are a part of your family. It's OK to cry. Even all day. After I read your question I got choked up because it reminded me of my dog Poochie I had to put down and that was 10 years ago. You will start to feel better in time. It does help to get another dog in time. Whatever feels best for you. You are not replacing Peanut, because he will always have a place in your heart. You will always have special memories of him. It does help to get another dog to give your love to and get that love back. There are a lot of deserving pets that need someone like you.

My heart goes out to you, losing a pet is like losing a family member. I lost my rottweiler a few months back and am still grieving. I have pictures of him all over and it always puts a smile on my face and helps me remember how special he was in my life. Everyone grieves differently, some people can't have pictures, due to the reminder - but some do. I too know that "my baby" is not suffering any longer either, he was almost 9 and died in his sleep of heart failure. But he was in his house and looked very comfortable - I will never forget that look!
Anyways, they are in our lives for a reason and should never be forgotten.

Hey Sweetie,
You are not alone! I had to put my best friend of 11 years down last Friday and I too am heartbroken. You can create a memorial for your pet by linking thru my dogs memorial below. It made me feel alot better, and let me know there are others out there dealing with the same incredible heartbreak. Just know that your dog is alive in your heart, never gone. Believe that. Here's something else that might make you feel better:
RAINBOW BRIDGE
There is a special poem written long ago (author unknown) that tells of a special place where our beloved four legged friends go after they pass. The place is called The Rainbow Bridge.
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

I am so sorry for your loss. It is a hard thing to do. I have had to do it and may have to do it again soon - to my 8 month old kitten. I know you took very good care of Peanut while he was here. He loved you as much as you loved him. He will be missed. I am glad you have good memories of him. The memories will always be there... Hugs to you.

i know how u feel. recently i just let a pet go that i have had my whole life. the vet diagnosed him with diabetes. the worst part is that my older sister asked my mother y they did not put her to sleep, she also has diabetes. anyway i know it is a tough thing. u probably wont feel up to another animal for quite some time. it hurts, it makes your heart ache. i still go to bed every night thinking of what i could have done for him. i think of him every day of my life. you probably will too. but just remember that this is the best thing you could have done for him. and always remember that he is probably at your side right now protecting you. he may not be there in person, but he will always be there in spirit. the one thing that i have that lets me remember is my dog. a year back we got a puppy and he was chewing on one of his squeaker toys, when he saw Kitty's tail twitch. he went over and attacked it. Kitty swatted him on the head and gave him a cut. to this day he still has the scar, and now every time i look at it i remember Kitty
