OH deary oh deary.
There is a TON of stuff to deal with when making an AMV.
First, you need your footage. Now this means video files of your anime on your computer, not DVDs - real mpeg, mpg, wmv, or avi files. All work with WMM. Now if you do not have these, you can not create.
First timers with WMM are prone to downloading videos from other creators and splicing up those videos to fit their own. I understand that if you don't have the video and its your first time, but don't make a habit of it. It gets tired and even alot more, viewers that have seen the original AMV recognize the original video in your AMV.
Most people get fansubbed episodes on the net and use those, or else RAWS themselves. Many others, like myself use capture cards to copy the video on DVDs to the computer. These cards hook up to a DVD player and record the video they play out.
THough some production companies have learned to jinx their disks, such as Funimation, as Fruits Basket and Ranma 1/2 both are completely washed out and are not even worth copying.
When this happens, people buy Chinese rips of the DVDs. THese are cheaper and have no encoding to deal with.
I have a Hellsing CHinese rip DVD set that I used and its wonderful.
Next is your music. ANything will do, but I stress to the UTMOST do not use a song and an anime b/c they're your favorite. YOu make an AMV because the music flows with the animation creation that you made.
Like.. "Oh my Favorite Song is Sexyback! OMG I havta to make a FLCL music video to it!!!"
No, no, no. Unless you are totally SURE that you can make that video without creating a cliche, don't do it. ALot of first timers make videos that are not worth watching because their fandom has taken over the creation.
But many times, look over your music collection and search for a song that may fit a certain anime. - LIke "She Hates Me" to Ranma 1/2. The logistics work.
Also, listen to the radio more, as their music is more open and change styles all the time. You might just hear a song that you never heard before and love it because it fits a certain anime perfectly.
But basically its alot of synching the music to spots of anime, cutting at certain spots and seeing the ideal AMV in your head.
Please, when you make a video, do not do more than 8 second lengths of straight video from the anime. Meaning do not just put in a strip of video and say "Oh this works" and its the first 15 seconds of the anime, where everyone has already seen. Its not new, and quite boring to the eyes.
Many people actually create an 'outline' where they put on paper the certain parts of the anime to fic to the music's words.
I don't do that. I let the creation flow evenly as I work.
But try to create three videos, good videos before showing the world your creations. You will have learned techniques and gotten better during that time.
Don't think that I am not deterring you to play around. PLease do.
Many famous videos herein are from times when AMV creators just went freaky in creation one night.
Try, try again, thats all you can do.

You can't make an AMV with WMP, you kinda need Windows Movie Maker. It should be under your accessories.
