The Skylight Diner is probably the oldest diner in Manhattan. It was there when I was a kid and before. It's on 34th Street at 9th Ave.

If you only go to one diner in NYC, this is it. It's one of those old metal buildings. It's what you're looking for.

Toms Diner (113/Broadway) is a fun place to go, especially if you have out-of-towners in tow, as its claim to fame is being the diner from Seinfeld (from the outside, not the inside) but cheesy stuff aside, its a classic style diner thats dirt cheap and plenty fast. Good stuff.
