It's the law of supply and demand. If they are the only provider in your area, they charge more because you have fewer options. Your best bet is to play the cable company off against a satellite company. Just go with whoever is offering the best deal. They will offer deals from time to time if you switch from one to the other. I know people that switch regularly between the two to keep the prices down.

I wonder the same thing. I love it when I am a new customer, then tyhe cable bill is like 19.99 plus tax for 3 months. Then it seems it just gets out of control. When I had internet thru my cable provider I was paying like 160 a month. It was out rageous. Ours is still pretty high because we have DVR thru our Time Warner. I don't know how old you are but I am 35 and remember the goold ole days when we had free TV. And some days depending on the weather the reception was worse. We are a nation of couch potatoes and I think the cable networks know it. I have found by calling my cable service on a regular basis to go over my bill and have them point out to me what my dollars are really going for, they are very generous in offering me new discounts, too keep me as a happy customer. So I always have at least 25% discount added to my bill, sometimes more. So call them, it will be worth the time especially if you let them know you are not happy with the amount you pay. I have even threatened to leave and go to dish. I think that came with my biggest discount. :)

I'm guessing because of the digital channels.

The guy who came to install my cable internet was a real jerk. The guy who came to install my alarm system, however, was really cool. He had worked for the cable company before the alarm gig. He came back a couple of weeks later and put this thing that looks like whatever the internet guy put on my cable line to block out the channels, except that it was a dummy that would fool the cable company when they check.
