I am 17 and made about 5000 dollars in 2006. I got my w2 information and there was a decent amount of federal income tax witheld. How exactly do i go about getting that back?

If that's your only income, download a 1040EZ form at irs.gov and fill it out. You should get back all the money that was withheld for federal income tax.

Go to H&R Block with your W-2,they will charge you a fee or go to your post office and pick up booklets 1040EZ and 1040A and read the instructions. You will need forms 1040EZ and 1040A. If you are filing just for yourself and have less then $400.00 interest for year, the 1040EZ, would be right for you. Keep a copy of any form you send to IRS. I hope this helps you.

Go to www.irs.gov and click on the Free E-filers link - choose one and it will walk you right through entering your information. If your parents still claim you - make sure to answer "yes" to the question "Can anybody else still claim you".

You get it back by filing a tax return.
