Purchase items that are good for more than one meal. For example, a large bag of rice is good for several meals. Peanut Butter, jelly, bread, all those items that will go far. Also, use coupons on items that you normally buy, and look for buy one get one free deals, if your store does that. I typically spend about $140 per week on a family of five. By using coupons and special deals my store offers, I save approximately $20-40 per week. Never buy single serve items like those little bags of chips, etc. And always look for what the item costs PER OUNCE, not the actual price of the item. Yes, it takes some time, but if it saves you money, its definitely worth it!

Eggs are awesome for a nutricious, cost effective protein. Use starches to stretch the meals (rice and potatoes do wonders). Frozen and canned veggies are less expensive than fresh, and depending on how you cook them the difference is less easy to tell.

Buy in large sizes, and do portion control: figure out how much of something you'll need, and just use that much; you can use the rest the next night as filler in a soup or stew.

And speaking of soup or stew, they are a great way to stretch things. The cheaper cuts of meat will flavor the soup, and you can add just about anything (veggies, rice, potatoes).

When you get meat, get the most affordable cuts and work with them: chicken breasts are much more expensive than thighs and legs. Ground meat used to be the cheap alternative, but now you can get chuck and london broil cheaper: find an inexpensive cut of meat, and chop it with a knife. While that may not make hamburger, it certainly can be the meat in spaghetti sauce!

Oh, and cereal is good, but it can be very expensive. The bagged cereal is about half the price or less as the name brand, and is pretty good (my kids prefer them).

Hope these tips help

I would purchase rice and dried beans with some of the money and then get a lot of ground beef and chicken. You should have money left for other meal items. Good luck to you I feed my family for a month on 200 dollars and it is a hard long stretch but chili beans can be served for a few days in a row as toppings on chips and in tortillas for burritos or tostadas. I hope that I have been able to help you on this matter.

depending how many people you are feeding for the week. I have 4 in my house hold and 125 lasts almost a week. that includes lunch stuff for the kids. instead of buying hashbrowns i get the 20 lbs bag of potatoes. just cut it up small and fry like hashbrowns. meat i look at different prices in the stores. i find that meat that is already frozen is usually cheaper. lots of veggies, makes good side dishes to fill everyone up. just make a list of what u think u will be eating that week. find recipes that require the ingredients u already have or will be buying to make it last longer. just like chicken, if u have left overs just break it up re-heat it and mix it up with veggies or make a hot chicken sandwich. it all depends on ur interest.

well depending on the amount of people it would be hard to decide for 1-3 people you should plan the meals for the week if you go over the limit buy generic food if you have more than that say 4+ you should buy it store brand and in packs like in large amounts in bulk

Well produce is expensive when it adds up, so little of that. I would buy a bag of pinto beans, and some eckridge sasuage. Put 1/2 of each in a pot with water and chili powder and salt and pepper. ( that will make 2 nights dinner)
Buy 2 cans of tomato sauce, an onion, and a pack of spaghetti. One night have spaghetti( add garlic, onions, basil, salt and pepper to a can of tomatos, and use 1/2 of the spaghetti)
One night get chicken breast and bread with italian breadcrumb. Saute on the stove, put in an oven safe dish with other can of crushed tomatos( prepared same..save some sauce for noodles) put cheese on top and bake. Then cook spaghetti. You have chicken parm.
Other cheap things to make is eggs, omeltes, fritattas( like a big baked omlete)
Oatmeal is cheap.

Bag of potatoes..........mash potatoes or baked potatoes...5lb bag $3.50
Four for $1.00 cans of string beans
Loaf of bread....99 cents depending on brand
Two large bags of chips for $5.00
Ham or Bologna for sandwiches....99 cents Bologna or ham $4.00
2- 12 packs of soda for $5.00
A dozen of eggs....99 cents
Sausage ..........2.49 cents
2 cartons of juice......minute maid $1.15 a piece
99 cent a lb. grapes or 59 cents a lb. banana
5 TV dinners for $1.00 each......Michelina
10-10 for $1.00 noodles (Ramen)
Gallon of milk $3.59

You should still have over $50.00 left if you decide to not buy the extra meat. I have been buying groceries for over 5 years ( with 6 people in the house) and I can always come home with a full basket and a little of everything.
