With previous versions of Office, the EULA (End User Licence Agreement) allowed the software to be installed on one desktop AND one portable device with the exception of the Student and Teacher Edition which allowed up to three devices. Software purchased with a system or with particular hardware is deemed to be OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) and can only ever be used on the original hardware. Retail software may be transfered to a new machine but OEM software cannot.
